"Surf" isn't one club and it isn't one filing. It's two separate nonprofits, a 1994 tournament nonprofit, and a for-profit events business now owned by a Florida investment firm that also holds a stake in one of the largest youth soccer networks in the world. Here's how the pieces actually fit together.
San Diego Surf and SDSC Surf aren't the same club, even though they share a name and a badge. San Diego Surf Soccer Club is the flagship — Del Mar, founded 1977, the master franchisor behind 50-plus "Surf"-branded clubs nationwide. SDSC Surf is a separate, smaller club out of Rancho Bernardo (legal name: San Diego Soccer Club, EIN 33-0022489) operating under the Surf umbrella. We have fourteen clean years of financials for SDSC Surf below. The flagship's own nonprofit numbers are still an open question — more on that in Ownership.
It started as one San Diego club in 1977. By 2013, the tournament and events business had been spun into a for-profit LLC. In 2022, a Florida firm called Pioneer Sports & Entertainment took ownership of that events business and the Surf brand itself — and, per industry reporting, picked up a stake in Rush Soccer along the way, one of the largest youth soccer networks on earth. A 1994 tournament nonprofit and the SDSC Surf chapter still stand apart from anything Pioneer controls.
This is SDSC Surf (legal name San Diego Soccer Club, EIN 33-0022489) — the North County Inland chapter, not the Del Mar flagship. Tax-exempt since August 1984.
Revenue has grown almost every year since 2011 — $1.57M to $3.50M, more than doubling over 14 years with only two down years, 2018 and 2019.
"Other salaries and wages" sat at $0 in most years before 2020, then jumped past 60% of expenses by 2021–2024, once the club started carrying coaches as actual employees instead of the small stipend line it used before.
This is the part that doesn't show up on any single Form 990. Reconstructed from OpenCorporates, the Florida and California Secretaries of State, and industry trade coverage.
Pioneer manages both Surf Sports, LLC (CA #201310610144, formed April 2013 — the events/tournament business that runs Surf Cup) and Surf Soccer, LLC (a Florida entity with a California branch registered Feb. 2023, likely holding the club-brand side of the operation). Both list the same Del Mar address, 2683 Via De La Valle, Suite G425.
Pioneer's COO, Brian Enge, does double duty as Surf's own spokesman in club press releases about new affiliate signings — investor and brand, speaking with one voice. Trade press reports Pioneer has also picked up a stake in Rush Soccer, which bills itself as the largest youth soccer club in the world: 125-plus clubs, 50 countries, 55,000-plus athletes.
A holdover from an earlier era — incorporated in 1994, nineteen years before the events side went commercial as Surf Sports LLC. Still active, still legally separate from anything Pioneer controls. Whether it does any real work in today's tournament, or just exists as a shell with an old filing date, isn't something the public record settles.
This is the entity whose fourteen-year financial history sits above. It operates under the Surf umbrella but is legally distinct from both the Del Mar flagship and everything Pioneer controls. No related for-profit sibling has turned up for this entity specifically.
We checked. ProPublica, GuideStar, and CauseIQ's own ranking of the largest San Diego soccer nonprofits — which names SDSC Surf, City SC, and Rebels SC — never mentions a nonprofit called San Diego Surf Soccer Club. The simplest explanation, and the one consistent with everything else on this page: the flagship's operations likely run entirely through Pioneer's for-profit entities rather than a standalone 501(c)(3), unlike SDSC Surf, which files on its own. Not confirmed. But it's where the evidence points.
Board officers have been unpaid every year on record. Paid staff shifted from a small "executive compensation" line to full employee payroll starting around FY2020.
